Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔ̃c̣ǝ(-nɔ) A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: ten
Tsezi: oc̣ino
Ginukh: oc̣eno
Khvarshi: ũc̣in
Inkhokvari: õc̣c̣o
Bezhta: ac̣ona
Gunzib: ɔc̣c̣ɔn
Comments: PTsKh *ʔoc̣ǝ-(no); PGB *ʔɔc̣ǝ-n(ɔ) (for Gunzib Bokaryov has recorded oc̣ǝn: the correct form is probably ɔc̣ǝn or ɔc̣c̣ǝn with emphatic gemination). Most languages have not preserved nasalisation of the first vowel (lost by dissimilation to the nasal suffix -nɔ); the Khvarsh. and Inkh. form, however, speak strongly in favour of nasalised *ɔ̃ in PTs.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔ̃č̣ʷe-(nɔ) A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: nine
Tsezi: oč̣ino
Ginukh: ʕač̣ino
Khvarshi: ũč̣in
Inkhokvari: õč̣č̣e
Bezhta: ač̣ena
Gunzib: uč̣č̣in (Gunz.)
Comments: PTsKh *ʔõč̣e-(no) (-a- in Gin. is irregular); PGB *ʔɔč̣ʷ[e]-n(ɔ) (labialised *-č̣ʷ- must be reconstructed to account for labial u- instead of ɔ in Gunz.). Gemination in Inkh. and Gunz. is emphatic (it is recorded only by MSU, and not noticed by Bokaryov). Nasalisation here has the same pattern of distribution as in PTs *ʔɔ̃c̣ǝ- 'ten'.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔʁ: (~-ɔ̃-,-ʁ)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: thigh, hip
Tsezi: oʁI
Ginukh:
Comments: PTsKh *ʔoʁ. Inkh. and Khvarsh. (Radzhibov) have 'hip' which raises phonetic problems: in fact, it may reflect another root (see PEC *ʡĭnGwV), otherwise lost in Tsezian.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔƛV A
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 belt 2 woman's belt
Inkhokvari: õc-oƛu 2
Gunzib: ɔƛe 1
Comments: The Inkh. word is a compound (for the first part cf. perhaps ocu 'hoop', Gunz. ab-õc 'beads'?).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔlɔdu ( ~ -r-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: beer
Tsezi: orodu
Comments: Attested only in Tsez., but having a probable Av. parallel.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔnɨχ:ʷ B
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: cave, cavern
Tsezi: imχu
Khvarshi: iχnu (Radzhibov)
Inkhokvari: eχnu
Bezhta: onoχ
Gunzib: ɔnuχ (G.)
Comments: PTsKh *ʔönχʷV / *ʔöχʷnV ( ~ -e-); PGB *ʔɔnuχ (Bezht. onoχ < *anoχ /which would be regularly expected/ due to vocalic assimilation).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔ̃q-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: shady slope of a mountain
Bezhta: õq-ƛ̣as (Tlad.)
Gunzib: ɔ̃qqu (G.)
Comments: PGB *ʔɔ̃q- with different suffixes. Cf. also Bezht. Khosh. oq̇ijo (with secondary -q̇- < *ʔɔ̃q-ʔVj; cf. analoguously Khosh. biq̇ijo 'sunny slope' and Tlad. biq-ƛ̣as id. with a similar development < PTs *bɨq- 'sun'); Gunz. (Bokarev's dictionary) ãqeru (with ã misspelled instead of ɔ̃).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔqru
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 cave, cavern 2 trap, pitfall
Tsezi: boc̣-aqu 2
Ginukh: oqru 1
Khvarshi: oqru 1 (Radzhibov)
Comments: PTsKh *ʔɔqru (with metathesis < *qɔru, or < *ʔɔ-qVru with a laryngeal prefixation). The Tsez. word is a compound with boc̣i 'wolf', lit. 'wolf-hole' (cf. the meaning of Av. q̇:or).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔrƛVmV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 big log 2 wooden cornice
Tsezi: oƛermu 2
Khvarshi: oƛermu 1 (Radzhibov)
Inkhokvari: orƛomu 1
Comments: PTsKh *ʔoRƛVmu (/*ʔoƛVRmu).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔs(:) ( ~ ħ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: silver
Khvarshi: os
Inkhokvari: os
Comments: PTsKh *ʔos.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔɔχ ( ~ *ħ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: grape
Khvarshi: oh
Inkhokvari: oh
Comments: PTsKh *ʔoχ̥1̇ (~ -h).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔugVr- (~-o-,-l-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: humpbacked
Ginukh: ugliš
Comments: Isolated in Gin., but having probable external parallels (the Gin. form should be kept distinct from Inkh. =uḳale 'curved, humpbacked', see under PEC *=V̆ḳVl).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔusmusV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: wasp
Bezhta: üžmüži (Khosh.)
Comments: Attested only in Bezht. (thus several PTs reconstructions - with *s, *š, *z, *z:, *ž or *ž: - are possible), but having probable external parallels.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔuṭV- (~*ħ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: red
Khvarshi: uṭej
Inkhokvari: uṭana
Comments: PTsKh *ʔuṭV-.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔũž(:)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: axe
Khvarshi: ũž
Comments: Attested only in Khvarsh., but having probable external parallels.
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔü̃č̣VrV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: weed
Tsezi: eč̣uri
Ginukh: oč̣ili
Khvarshi: ič̣ila (Radzhibov)
Inkhokvari: ãč̣e
Bezhta: ic̣owa
Gunzib: ĩč̣ur (Gunz)
Comments: PTsKh *ʔü̃č̣VRe (but the Inkh. reflex is irregular: -ĩ- would be expected); PGB *ʔĩč̣ur(a) (cf. also Bezht. Tlad. ič̣erö). The PTs vocalic reconstruction is not very certain.
Proto-Tsezian: *-ʔ(V)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: not (negative particle)
Ginukh: -j-(om)
Khvarshi: -j-
Bezhta:
Gunzib: -ōj-s
Comments: PTsKh *-j- (past negative and prohibitive in Khvarsh., prohibitive in Gin.); PGB *-ʔ- (present indefinite and past negative).
Proto-Tsezian: *-ʔV
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: in empty series
Tsezi:
Ginukh:
Inkhokvari:
Bezhta:
Gunzib: -ā / -ō
Proto-Tsezian: *ʕaš:-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: thick (of flat objects)
Tsezi: ʕašju
Ginukh: ʕaššu
Bezhta: äšijo (Khosh.)
Gunzib: aššu (Gunz.)
Comments: PTsKh *ʕaš-iju; PGB *aš-iju (cf. also Bezht. Tlad. ʕäššö). With reduplication cf. perhaps also PGB *šeše-ru 'thick (of liquids), dense' (Bezht. Khosh. šeše-ro, Tlad. šeše-rö, Gunz. šeše-ru).
Proto-Tsezian: *ʕemuq̇(a)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: burdock
Tsezi: ħimuq̇a
Bezhta: emuq̇
Gunzib: emuq̇
Comments: PGB *ʔemuq̇. In Tsez. one would rather expect ʕ-; reasons for devoicing the laryngeal are not quite clear.
